Sophie Vallance Cantor (b. 1993, Scotland) is a Glasgow based artist, working with oil, acrylic and charcoal on canvas. Cantor combines her signature motifs, the majestic feline and sumptuous peach, with bold slogans in capitals lettering. Cantor portrays her own two cats, Autumn and Luna, in various contexts and garbs, from a Henri Rousseau-esque tiger in the jungle to the warmth of a ginger tabby cat, wearing a balaclava or ruff. The humour and familiarity in Cantor’s paintings draw the viewer in, made attractive further still by her handling of colour; olive greens and soft pinks are contrasted with vermilion reds, blacks and azure blue, all applied with heavy brush strokes on large canvases.
Since graduating from Camberwell College of Arts in 2015, Cantor has exhibited in London, Berlin, Antwerp, Grenoble, Mallorca, Sao Paulo, Rome and Athens. Her work is owned by important international private collections and institutions.
