Just a Studio is delighted to announce the launch of its inaugural exhibition in London, UNSELLABLE, curated by Eleanor Stephenson. This exhibition will feature the work of five emerging artists, Andreas Stylianou, Sam Harris, Sola Olulode, Sophie Vallance Cantor and Yulia Iosilzon. The artworks presented are all site-specific installations, which respond to a call to investigate materials, sizes, and forms, that lie outside of these artist’s usual practice. In so doing, this exhibition reflects the gallery’s core mission of supporting artistic experimentation and development, over commercial viability. Process is at the forefront of the works on display; a focus on practice which reflects the ritualistic and habitual nature of art making. Each work acts as a totem of the self, reflecting the intimacy of artist and material.Â
Â
Andreas Stylianou (b. 1990, Cyprus) is a painter and sculptor, working between London and Nicosia. For UNSELLABLE, Stylianou has made a cartoonesque sculpture, exploring the connections between childhood experiences, sexual deviancy, and gay club culture in Soho.
Â
Sam Harris (b. 1999, England) is a conceptual artist working in London. In UNSELLABLE, Harris will be presenting a body of work that explores psychogeography, which includes a cabinet of clay tobacco pipes that he collected on the River Thames. This conceptual piece draws from the history London, the space in which these objects were consumed, discarded, and subsequently found, to subvert and question contemporary taboos.
Â
Sola Olulode (b. 1996, England) is a painter working in London. For UNSELLABLE, Olulode has grown her signature scene of bedroom intimacy, to create a multi-media, life-size installation of a couple in bed. This site-specific work grapples with queer love and Black womanhood.
Â
Sophie Vallance Cantor (b. 1993, Scotland) is a painter working in Glasgow. For UNSELLABLE, Vallance Cantor has pushed her characteristic motif, the majestic feline, out of the oil painting and into real life, presented as cat on a cushion. Accompanying this site-specific installation, will be a painting of the artist with her black cat Luna, to further the dialogue between her artistic practice and home-studio.
Â
Yulia Iosilzon (b. 1992, Israel) is a painter and sculptor working in London. For UNSELLABLE, Iosilzon will be painting an entire wall of the space with her semi-abstract figures and shapes. This mural will be juxtaposed by three paintings; both bodies of work reflect Iosilzon’s interests in fairy-tale stories and dreams.
